Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet

Today we catch-up Aussie indie rock band, The Griswolds. I’ve known the boys for a few years now and apart from wicked tunes, what’s struck me about The Griswolds is that they’re just 4 dudes with amazing energy who love life, the banter and who still manage to remain humble and true to who they are as people, despite rising international success signed to an American label slash and spending 9 out of the past 12 months on tour in the USA.

How we met is a bit of a longer tale, but a massive part of the past 8 years of my life has been working in the Australian music industry. Since 2006, I’ve been part of running music festivals & events around Australia, put a 900 square metre ice-rink on the sands of Bondi Beach, managed artists/bands, created a role as music supervisor on Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO!, shot photography for triple j, shot photography/written for Broadsheet and the list goes on.

Working in the music industry is fuckin’ amazing! For me, my foray started with my return to Australia with dreams of cities paved with gold and entertaining packed stadiums with people singing along to songs that I wrote (that hasn’t dulled :D), but the harsh reality is that within Australia the majority of artists don’t draw large crowds/make the Benjamins and generally survive on passion and juggling what little $$$ we do have coming in. The tight-knit Australian music community is made up of amazing individuals that bandy together to keep the independent Australian music scene churning.

And that, my friends, is how I met a few of the boys from The Griswolds… in 2011 I worked at Splendour In The Grass(Woodford) and then again in 2012 at Byron Byron and became buddies with a dude called Andy B, also working at the festival, who plays keys for Brisbane-based party dance crew The Belligerents.

I’d come across The Griswolds tunes through triple j unearthed and had initiated banter with the lads via the social medias, so when it turned out The Belligerents and The Griswolds lads were sharing a bill at The Workers Club in Melbourne one night, I decided to cruise down, sink a few beers, shoot a few pics and catch-up with the lads. We didn’t really hang out that night and I wouldn’t say that we really knew each other, but having worked with and around people for many years, I’m a person that survives and thrives on instinct. Give me 5 minutes with someone and I’ll quickly gauge who I think they are and what drives them; I love a dad joke, good people and the banter, and man, these boys have that in spades, so when I found out they were back in Melbourne this month to kick-off their debut album“Be Impressive”, I jumped at the opportunity to interview them for the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet podcast and return the favour in kind by shooting a shitloads of cool pics for them and use the opportunity to plug The Griswolds – “Be Impressive” national Australian album launch tour, presented by triple j, the Harbour Agencyand Chugg Entertainment.

The Mile Guy Club, LA studio shenanigans recording a dream debut with producer Tony Hoffa, drowning as kids,jack-hammering concrete for a living, aeroplane mazz-es.. it’s all here  Truly a pleasure hanging out these lovely, talented guys who are working their arses off in the pursuit of their dreams.

Thanks for listening and joining us for what’s become a life-changing experience for me.

I hope you enjoy this podcast series as much as I love creating it for you.

Tom Richardson is a close mate of mine and inspirational Australian singer/songwriter, who has performed in 15 different countries, had his music featured on Rip Curl surfing documentaries and in 2018, hits a decade of travelling the globe with a dream job as a full-time independent musician since the age of 21.

On today’s podcast we chat about Tom Richardson's latest EP ‘Promise of the Light’, which is due to launch worldwide in early 2018 and was recorded in solace in lakeside cabins in Alberta, Canada and jungle hideaways in Bali, Indonesia, before collaborating with close friends Benny Walker & Tim Bennett in home studios in the Adelaide Hills and with seaside views at his home in Warrnambool, Australia.

We also enjoy vast-ranging chats about the systems & processes and tools that Tom utilises as a small business owner to keep a balanced life of physical & mental health, his favourite podcasts including Song Exploder, The Tim Ferris Show and Pilgrim Heart with Krishna Das, different meditation and yoga techniques that he practices, sharing stages with the likes Joe Bonamassa, Cold Chisel, John Butler Trio and a musical  passport of memories including musical collaborations with Native American poets, Indian Kirtan masters, Fijian highland village choirs & indigenous Australian icons. Fascinating chats!

This latest release truly reflects Tom Richardson’s nomadic schedule and his life across the past 10 years, which is a musical odyssey of regular tours around Australia, North America, Asia and Europe leading to “rave reviews, prime festival slots, and international airplay”.

Oh and we snapped up the exclusive 1st worldwide global release of ‘Somebody Say Love’, the first single off Tom Richardson's ‘Promise of the Light’ EP! YES!

Ever wanted to work in the USA like me?

Last year I was in Los Angeles and the USA under the ESTA Visa Waiver Program for just under 3 months to explore what Los Angeles was like as a place to be based for work - to see if there was another side to the City of Angels away from the plastic fantastic and then based on these experiences, decide if I wished to pursue the O1 Visa as an option to work in the USA (also known as the O1 Alien of Extraordinary Ability Visa - yes, that’s what it’s called).

Now any Australian who has spent time in Los Angeles with a Green Card, E3 or O1 Visa will tell you that they have the best US Immigration Lawyer in the USA ever! And chances are that they might, but it’s not all cut & dried and there are some key things that you need to know before you go splash the cash on securing a lawyer in the hopes of chasing the American dream.

This week on Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! I chat with Los Angeles-based US International Business and Immigration lawyer, Andrea Szew, about:
  • The 5 Must-Haves When Applying for a US Visa.
  • How Trump's administration is affecting foreign nationals' ability to work in the US 1 year on since taking office and what you as an applicant needs to take into consideration.
  • Andrea Szew’s life growing up in California, her time at UCLA and what inspired her to become a lawyer specializing in Immigration Law.
  • Some of the iconic Australian clients she’s worked with including Hootsuite CEO, Ryan Holmes, Australia’s Thunder from Down Under in Las Vegas and much much more.

For context, Andrea and I met through the Aussies in LA / Australians in LAFacebook Pages, which is a wonderful community of Aussies and a super important resource for any Australian based in or seeking to be approved for a USA visa to work in Los Angeles.

And the good news is that there is SO much more to L.A. than the glitter, gloss and your name up in lights; countless hiking trails in the greater Los Angeles area, live comedy every night of the week, amazing Mexican food, a live music scene that makes your mouth water and I fell in love with the Sports Bar culture too. I’ve found the American people as a whole, from my previous holidays there and on this trip, to be so warm and welcoming, polite and giving. Plus if you need it, there’s this a super supportive community of expat Australians in both Los Angeles and New York City (should you need it) and a whole new country to explore. Loves it!

So if you an Australian businessman/women seeking to work in the USA or you have a friend who is… if you are award-winning digital media professional, an actor, musician, producer or entertainer who believes you have done the hard yards and have what it takes to make it in the USA, then this is the podcast for you!

Rad podcast chats!

Yesterday arvo I sat down with pro surfers Taj Burrow, Jay Davies and Dino Adrian at Hotel Ravesis in Bondi Beach to introduce a brand new Western Australian beer, Honest Ale, to the East Coast of Australia.

Honest Ale was born in the Margaret River region of Western Australia in May of 2017 and is the product of these three west oz natives in partnership with the crew at Black Brewing Co.

I actually grew up in Perth and every summer holidays we’d head down to the south coast of WA to Busselton (or Busso as the locals call it) in the Margaret River region and I have so many happy memories of that magical part of the world!

Inspiring chats as Taj, Jay and Dino share their earliest ever childhood memories, what the Honest Ale name means and what Black Brewing Co did to bring their dreams into reality and their advice for any one of you who has a dream, but is afraid to take that first step.

Super chats, super night out with the boys in Bondi Beach. Let’s get into it!

Social Social Media + UX, Funnel Strategy and The Next Wave of Brand Influencer Campaigns.

WOW! International Business Review Conference contacted me earlier this year and asked if I would like to speak at their Future Social Media Conference in Melbourne and Sydney this month and early next year.

As soon as they asked, I was like “Damn straight, as long as I can do it as a live podcast presentation with an industry guest”. IBRC jumped on board and the next thing you know I was jetting down to Melbourne for Future Social Media for my live presentation and podcast with Carat media agency Senior Business Manager, Harry McGoldrick, who works with wicked brands across a range of industries himself including Disney, Mattel, Marvel and more!

On today’s show we chat about the following:

  • Funnel Strategy. Creating strategic content and advertising campaigns to drive results and your client’s ROI.
  • The Next Wave of Brand Influencer Campaigns. Pivoting from the wanna-be Instagram model to working with and upskilling influencers to create campaigns with a measurable uplift in Sales and Return On Investment.

PLUS, here are just some of the cool topics we discuss:

  • Describe your favourite or one of your favourite campaigns that you’ve seen or been a part of in the digital space. What was it that you liked about it and why?
  • What’s one way a creative/digital agency can do as far as ways of working to make your like easier as a Senior Business Manager at Carat?
  • What brands do you think are nailing it in the digital space at the moment utilising a combination of amazing creative and the latest in advertising solutions.
  • Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - The Ghost Ship on Sydney Harbour.
    • How did the Ghost Ship concept come about?
    • What was one of the most unexpected elements about bringing the activation to life?
    • How did it work?
  • What are digital platform products and developments on the horizon in 2018 that excite you and that you think digital marketers should be across?
  • Given that one of the imperatives as a Media Agency is demonstrating ROI to clients. What things are you looking for when working with influencers and how would you like to influence change in how these influencers are being used?

Entrepreneurship Podcast Feature: Jason Havey - Spinning Logic, Iowaska in Peru & Blackhawk Military Intelligence Analyst.

Much like myself, Jason Havey has lived a super interesting life, rich with amazing experiences. A successful businessman, Jason is the COO of Onnit Labs global health and wellness brand, formerly an award winning Hotelier with 16 years of experience, most recently as General Manager of both the Hilton Madison Monona Terrace and the Sheraton Madison at the same time and originally an infantry mortarman, which eventually lead to him becoming a Military Intelligence Analyst for a Blackhawk helicopter unit.

We cover a vast array of subject matter from growing up super poor in Wisconsin as the child of a single mother, surviving a horrific car crash, breaking 3 vertebrae and having to learn how to walk again, the impact that float tanks make to how he operates, taking Iowaska in Peru not once, but twice, Reverend Jim Jones and the Jonestown massacre in Guatemala, being taken far outside his comfort zone and feeling like his eyes were opened for the first time the jungles of Central America during his military service and the joys of becoming a bone marrow donor and the privilege of being able to save the life of another person.

This Wisconsin native now resides in Austin (Texas) and for the past 3 years Jason has been the host of the Spinning Logic Podcast with over 150 episodes to date, where the goal of Spinning Logic is to thread together the unique stories of unique guests and to celebrate the vast array of people that represent humankind.

Boom, Bash, Yeah! BRŁO Brewery, Berlin. LIVE craft beer podcast! 🇩🇪🍻✨

Berlin’s craft beer scene is alive and well! Last week on my very last day on German soil, I treated myself to one last craft beer and streetart walking tour around Berlin to sample some of this magical city's delicious craft beers and take in the history of Berlin just one last time before jetting out to Australia.

My final stop for the day was BRŁO Brewery. Earlier in the week, I’d sampled their delicious Pale Ale on tap at St Oberholz in Rosenthaler Platz (the co-working space where Soundcloud made its first steps) and wanted to get a taste for the rest of their range.

Much to my delight, while the BRŁO founders weren’t on site, Devin Duffy Meade, self-confessed craft beer nerd, BRŁO’s sales & marketing dude and expert tour guide was in on his days off and I was like.. FUCK it! Let’s record a quick 26 minute podcast!

Kick-ass chats and if you’ve ever wanted to know more about Berlin’s craft beer scene then THIS is the place to wet your whistle! Oh, and we tell you the awesome story behind what BRŁO means too. Get amongst it!

P.s. Mad love & shoutouts to bar guru Hannah Morrison at BRŁO for the beer flight, beer + food matching sample for the porter & take-aways… Can you believe Berlin Airport Security made me skull that BRŁO German IPA at the airport??!!

Prost! 😃✨🍻🇩🇪

I am truly inspired by independent Australian singer/songwriter and producer Hayden Calnin.

Since 2012 Hayden has enjoyed radio play from high profile stations in the USA, UK and Australia such as Triple J (Australia), BBC6 (UK) and KCRW (USA), he’s amassed over 15 million spins on Spotify, he’s been featured international music blogs such as Indie Shuffle, Stereogum and Pigeons & Planes, had his music featured on renown TV shows such as Suits, Parenthood, So You Think You Can Dance USA, The 100, Teen Wolf, MTV’s Awkward, Meet The Fosters and for the UK & Japanese official trailers for Oscar winning film, ‘Room’ and had The Vampire Diaries lead actor/director, Paul Wesley, reach out to him on Twitter as a fan, personally requesting to use the track on an episode he was directing in the final season of The Vampire Diaries

He’s sold out shows in Australia and the UK, to packed rooms in Paris and Berlin, had the pleasure of touring with the likes of The Antlers, Matt Corby, Brooke Fraser, Mat McHugh, Missy Higgins and so many more!

In today’s episode of Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! weekly iTunes entrepreneurship podcast we explore what Hayden Calnin's latest EP 'Dirt’ means to him, the mental health challenges of young adults, how it can affect them and those around them, 2 unbelievable "pinch me" moments that he's experienced in his life thus far and just what drives Hayden Calnin to pursue this career in music.

This man is living, breathing proof of how pursuing your passions can thrust you to a life beyond your wildest dreams.

Marriage Equality. The answer is YES!

I don’t jump up on the soap box very often and so when I do you can rest assured that it’s subject matter that I am SUPER passionate about!

On Friday night I was kickin’ it at home after hectic week working on the social media strategy for the launch of a new app, when it struck me… Why the hell hadn’t I recorded an episode of my show about Marriage Equality? It’s a basic human right!

Being an ex Emirates flight attendant with LOADS of mates who are LGBTIQA, I am super passionate about the #MarriageEquality vote in Australia and want to be able to utilize my Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet weekly iTunes entrepreneurship podcast and social media presence to raise awareness for the vote and the need for Australians to take part in the upcoming Marriage Equality vote.

More than 760 million people countries around the world live in 23 countries where  same-sex marriage is already a legal right. How are we not on board already?? Fact. We were the 2nd country in the world to given women the legal right to vote (yep, New Zealand beat us again 😃). How are we so far behind now??

I immediately shot a text to my home-boy Craig Mack, who is a Social Media Strategist (TEDx Sydney, The Pinnacle Foundation, UTS), model with Wink Models, blogger, brand ambassador (Beyond Blue, R U OK?) and openly gay Sydney man, to join me and create an exclusive show about #MarriageEquality and the upcoming plebiscite vote to legalise gay marriage in Australia.

We discuss his childhood growing up in Coffs Harbour as the son of a drug dealer and drug addict, a hilarious and heartfelt True or False quiz about the facts of Marriage Equality, hot pink pants on a Sunday, his exploration of his own sexuality and sexual orientation, some of the wicked content we’ve seen about Marriage Equality including Tim Minchin's 'I Still Call Australia Home’ Marriage Equality plebiscite parody, to Audible's "Listen to Love” six-part audio series that the platform partnered with The Equality Campaign to create, exploring marriage equality in Australia, LGBTQIA teen suicide prevention and MUCH much more.

Honestly, this is one of the most, beautiful, honest and wonderful shows that I have ever had the pleasure of recording.

I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do!

Australian singer/songwriter Mark Wilkinson is living the dream!

Just back from a global tour that’s included the USA, Canada, the UK, Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, Mark joined me at my Bondi Beach podcast studio to chat about his sold out shows in 8 different countries on 3 continents and sharing the stage with some of music industry's most enigmatic names including Brian Wilson and Rodriguez.

As Mark Wilkinson embarks on the final two legs of his global tour at home in Australia and New Zealand to launch brand new EP 'Lost In A Dream’, we chat about:

  • Meeting through another Sydney singer/songwriter, Kate Gogarty, whom I used to manage and I surprise him with the story that I met this artist through a friend of hers via a dating app.
  • Mark’s first ever memories as a small child in Singapore.
  • A "pinch me" moment that he enjoyed whilst on tour in the Netherlands, where he thought to himself “I can’t believe that this is happening right now!”.
  • Mark's experiences self-producing the 'Lost In A Dream’ EP, taking the leap of faith to work solo without a producer and the next steps for his upcoming 3rd studio album.
  • 2 people who have inspired him on his journey to become a global, touring singer/songwriter.
  • 2 pieces of advice that Mark Wilkinson would give to someone who has a dream, but is afraid to take that first step.

Super inspiring chats & I hope you enjoy it as much as I do… Let’s get into it!

Fascinating show as we chat about Matthew Vroom's latest inventionthe 6 months spent living out of his Nissan sports car after completing business school in Texas, driving around the USA hot-spotting to work remotely on Henge Docks before finally settling into San Francisco, becoming semi-famous for the creation of a satirical cartoon called "I hate Pam” whilst in college, the logistics of working with manufacturers in foreign countries at a time when the tech that Henge Docks were creating hadn’t been envisioned yet and so much more.

Focused on the positives & new beginnings. This morning I emailed the founder & the GM of Bondi Beach Radio and effective immediately I am stepping away from the radio station & have asked them to remove Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! from the program grid.

This decision is something that I've been contemplating for a few months now for a number of reasons, which out of respect for the BBR crew and myself I won't go into. I am a little sad, but relieved to have made the right decision for myself and the business, brand and podcast moving forward.

The Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! show will continue to go from strength to strength every single week on iTunes with some amazing international guests coming up including Matt Vroom (San Francisco-based tech founder of Henge Docks), inspiring American #socialentrepreneur Alexis Jones and while I can't announce anything just yet, there are a few big things brewing for the business moving forward!

Much love to all my show subscribers, friends & fans. You guys and gals are one of the key reasons that I continue to evolve as a broadcaster and strive to bring you awesome new guests and their amazing stories each and every week! Love you! #WatchThisSpace #KeepPushin'

Fascinating episode of Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! this week as Tim Lo Surdo joins us to talk about social justice, “anti-rascism” and what inspired him to found Democracy in Colour. 🎙

Democracy in Colour is Australia’s first national racial justice advocacy organisation led by people of colour, who run campaigns to tackle structural racism; do rapid response work to hold political, cultural and corporate leaders to account on the things they say and do on race; and build platforms to increase the political voice of people of colour.

At the age of 23, Tim has lead by example in being a thought leader for change as the former Head of Campaigns at Oaktree Foundation, an adviser to two Senators, run national campaigns for a digital campaigning organisation in India, co-founded an international spoken word poetry platform, led communications for UN Youth Australia and organised young people in Queensland for the AYCC.

Every single week on Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! we interview inspiring individuals and entrepreneurs across a range of industries about what makes them tick and drives their hunger for success.

Next week on Friday 9th of June, Gaz Williams and his crew are launching FuckUp Nights Sydney at the picturesque Circular Quay at the Overseas Passenger Terminal next to Sydney Harbour Bridge, right near Sydney Opera House and yes, you can be a part of it!

Super inspiring tale of one of the main people that drives me to push myself further. Download this show and learn the secrets to drive, ambition and success.

From little things, big things grow…

Inspiring founder & owner of Northern Californian brewery, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co, is a man of passion, determination and innovation.

From humble roots, as a small West Coast craft brewery with a goal to produce 2,000 hectolitres of beer a year, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co is now a bi-coastal North American business that champions innovation, advanced energy technology & sustainability, business leadership and is now brewing 1.7 million hectolitres of beer a year from their West Coast and East Coast breweries.

After learning to brew from the father of a close friend at a young age, Ken Grossman opened a homebrew supply store in downtown Chico, called The Home Brew Shop in 1976, before selling it in 1978, founding Sierra Nevada Brewing Co in 1979 and releasing their first batch of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co beer in 1980, which was an American Stout.

At the time, there was no such thing as small-scale or “micro” brewery equipment in the USA and it was way too expensive to import from countries like Germany, so everything required for the brewery had to be repurposed or custom built, with Grossman travelling all over California and Oregon in search of stainless still tanks/equipment and teaching himself refrigeration and welding, so that he could fashion the majority of the new brewery out of recycled dairy equipment.

In today’s inspiring chat, brought to you by @craftbeerlovin’ on Instagram and the team at Phoenix Beers, we explore vast-ranging topics including Ken Grossman as an individual, the explosion and evolution of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co, his love of hiking, sailing, fishing and diving and how Sierra Nevada got its name (it’s not as 100% obvious as you think), Sierra Nevada’s partnership with monks in a small Northern California town - brewing a series of Ovila Abbey ales inspired by Belgian Trappist monks that helped raise millions of dollars for the monastery, the brewery’s approach to energy innovation including the installation of an array over 10,000 solar panels and fuel cells to reduce their environmental impact in 2007 to 2017, where the transition to gas turbines and introduction of Tesla Powerpack batteries now means that Sierra Nevada produce 80-90% of their own electricity onsite!

We chat about Ken’s first trip down to Australia for Good Beer Week 2017, the creation of Sierra Nevada’s Tropical Torpedo IPA, the introduction of their 2nd brewery on the east coast in the mountains of North Carolina to reduce shipping impact and the greenfield site, which enabled Sierra Nevada to minimise the impact in its construction and design, the process that the 5-10 new small batch Sierra Nevada beers brewed every single week have to go through to become part of the core range of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co beers and a teaser of the latest beers that are soon to be joining the Sierra Nevada family including goses, sours & more!

A wonderful journey and inspirational tale of a man who has pursued his passions tenaciously and evolution from one of the smallest of businesses in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges to one of the largest, most successful craft beer breweries in America!

I moved to Bondi Beach late last year after falling in love with the Sydney Eastern Suburbs beach lifestyle and I made a decision to stay.

One of the attractions of Bondi Beach for me is not only that I now live 5 minutes walk from Bondi Beach, with spectacular coastal walks and lunchtime swims part of my regular routine, but I have become friends with and have access to a wealth of like-minded, ambitious, progressive and creative individuals that work and reside in this beautiful suburb of Sydney.

So many in this local global beachside community possess a mentality that encompasses an understanding that 9-5 is a primitive way to exist and there is another way to achieve success, whilst living life to the fullest! (as we speak I am sitting here at the home office in my board shorts having started my working week at midday on a Monday).

One of those inspiring peeps in my life is the human embodiment of the word ‘community’ and the creator/owner of Bondi Tony's Burger Joint, Tony Gosden. Hailing from a music industry background as a promoter and band manager, Tony created Bondi Tony's Burger Joint as a salute to the rock’n’roll lifestyle, with a diverse mix of platinum records, graffiti/local art, march and books hanging on the walls of this Glenayr Avenue restaurant, Young Henrys beer on tap, a mouth-watering menu of burgers named after indie Australian bands and awesome tunes cranked all day while you eat, drink and be merry.

In today’s show, we chat about founding your own business and the values that you bring to your business as an individual, Tony’s background in the music industry and the stories behind the array of band-inspired burgers including the Classic Cog, Trippin’ Seahorse (my fave), Lost Valentino, Just a Jezabel and Johnny Collide, why Tony moved to Bondi 20 years ago and never left, his sense of community and partnering with local Sydney businesses like Young Henrys and Field To Fork to ensure we can all thrive and grow together and much, much more.

And if this alone isn’t enough to entice you to get inside the mind of this successful Aussie businessman and to download this chat, then try this on for size... Bondi Tony's Burger Joint is the most ordered food in Australia on app/website Deliveroo! Get it in your mouth and get it in your ears!

Let’s get into it!

Happiness!

Anyone who listens to Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! on Bondi Beach Radio and the iTunes podcast every week, will know that I am a massive fan and believer in chasing your dreams in the pursuit of happiness.

This week I am excited to have award-winning Australian comedian, podcaster & writer, Tom Ballard on Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! to promote his 2017 stand-up show ‘Problematic’ that’s LIVE at Giant Dwarf this Thursday - Sunday as part of Sydney Comedy Festival

Over the past 2 years since our last recording together, Tom’s stand-up comedy career has been on a sharp rise to the top, enjoying nominations for Best Show at both Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2016, his American television debut on Comedy Central’s Roast Battle at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival, his political podcast Like I’m A Six-Year-Old has just hit 100 episodes and continues to grow from strength to strength and at the end of 2016 he appeared in SBS’s ground-breaking series First Contact, a journey of discovery into Aboriginal Australia.

One of the joys that I have discovered that comes as a result of surrounding yourself with like-minded people also pursuing their own ambition and success, is that invariably you get to watch your friends rise to the challenge, share their journeys and celebrate your collective wins along the way.

Tom Ballard was certainly already well on his way to this success we first met 6 years ago, whilst launching triple j unearthed as a radio station back in 2011, but to then watch him have the courage to leave his role has co-host of the Tom & Alex morning show on triple j, take a leap of faith to achieve his dream of being a successful stand-up comedian and see where he’s at now just makes me so happy!

"Being your own master of your life and your passions, it’s a very powerful and important thing to do and if you have a chance to take it then grab it with both hands.” - Tom Ballard.

Never a truer word spoken, my man. Let’s get into the show!

It’s 1am and I’m struggling for sleep, so I put the pen to page to release thoughts that have been burning a hole in my brain.. my journey to Turkey to experience ANZAC Day’s 85th anniversary on the Gelibolu (Gallipoli) Peninsula.

On April 23rd my flight touched down in the beautiful city of Istanbul and we hit the road in the station wagon that was to be our home for the next few days. After a brief encounter with a Turkish policeman (clip-on koalas are great for avoiding speeding fines ;)), we arrived in Eceabat on the Gallipoli Peninsula, parked our “hotel” on a grassy lot across the road from Vegemite Bar and immersed ourselves in the local culture… ah, I mean drank copious amounts of 500ml Efes beer cans with other Aussies/Kiwis who’d made the trek to Turkey for ANZAC Day.

The next morning with dusty heads we headed off to the nearby ANZAC Cove and surrounding battlegrounds to learn about Australia’s first foray into war as a country in it’s own right. For the uninitiated, during World War 1 Allied forces were sent ashore at ANZAC Cove to capture the high-ground overlooking the Dardanelles, the strait of water connecting the Aegean and Black Seas. Securing the Gallipoli Peninsula would mean being able to protect Allied ships being sent to re-supply and support the Russians who were under heavy threat by advancing Turkish forces.

In the cold dark dawn of April 25th 1915, our Aussie diggers hit the beach below sheer cliffs which meant initially that less than a few hundred Turkish soldiers were required to hold their ground against thousands of ANZACs whilst the commander of the Ottoman forces, Mustafa Kemal, (later known as Atatürk, the founder of Turkey) mustered the Turkish 19th Division to contain the ANZAC troops.

If you’ve not had the privilege, the Gallipoli experience is one that is almost impossible to describe. After spending the day traveling around the various battle-zones, our crew headed down to ANZAC Cove at midnight along with thousands of other Australians, Turkish nationals and New Zealanders. Sitting there in the freezing cold night at the base of the cliffs at ANZAC Cove, I tried to imagine what it would have been like for the young Australian and New Zealand soldiers (many of them younger than 18) half a world away from their loved ones and home. Soaking up a mixture of emotions I recounted tales of World War 1 horror, acts of selfless bravery and thousands upon thousands of casualties on both sides. I was also struck by the tribute later made by Atatürk to those ANZACs who died in Gallipoli that is now inscribed on the Atatürk Memorial in Turakena Bay, Gallipoli:

“Heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives! You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.”

All these emotions and a moving pre-dawn service on the crowded foreshore left a lump in my throat and tear in my eye. It is for this reason that every ANZAC Day no matter where in the world I am, rain, hail or shine, I rise in the early hours to attend the ANZAC Day Dawn Service.

Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance has been my port of call in recent years and to this day whenever I stand in silence for the Ode of Remembrance and the bugle call of The Last Post, the memories, goosebumps, lump and chills return.

It’s just impossible to fathom the sacrifice of our ANZACs both past & present.. but this is what ANZAC Day means to me… This is what it means to be Australian..

“At the going down of the sun and in the morning.. We will remember them.. Lest We Forget."

Founder of The Beautiful Business Academy and co-founder The Ladies Lounge podcast, Emma Franklin Bell is raising the voice of women in business and paving the way for Australia’s creative leadership. Having just released her latest book, Your Beautiful

Solocast!

Who am I? I have lived in 5 different countries and 10 different cities. I have blonde hair, a ginger beard, have lived a life and career of so many lifetimes… all focused on the pursuit of loving life and The Secret to Happiness… although I didn’t necessarily recognise it at the time.

After dropping out of university and a Swinburne University BASc Biochemistry degree through lack of passion and zero desire to be stuck in a laboratory in 10-15 years time, I have served drinks and cleaned ashtrays back of house at Melbourne’s Crown Casino, spent 6.5 years jet-setting the globe with the rock star’s lifestyle without being the rock star as an Emirates Airline flight attendant, set a life up for myself as music industry professional, driving operations & logistics for music festivals/events around Australia such as Splendour In The Grass, event production and festival photography for triple j, created a music supervisor role for Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO! managed rock & roll bands and much, much more.

My life now, is so surreal. My main crust in 2017 is as a social media strategist and content producer. I work in an industry that didn’t exist 15 years ago guiding national and global brands on their social media strategy in the digital sphere, including the likes of Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Italian Beer, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Kraft Peanut Butter, Bulmers Original Cider, Miller Genuine Draft, Cancer Council Australia, Salesforce (through Mahlab Content Agency) and many more.

And all of this from a guy with no degree who dropped out of university… not once, but twice! The 1st was the BASc and the 2nd a Masters of Entrepreneurship & Innovation, which I dropped out of as I was spread too thin and didn’t wish to wait 4 years to start chasing new opportunities… I’m still not convinced you can teach entrepreneurship, but that’s another story 😉

Not only am I now back working for myself making the same ca$h money in 2.5 days a week that I was making in 5 days a year ago, but I am also lecturing at Macleay College in Sydney, have brand and lifestyle that I created for myself called Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet!, I’m being paid for social media influencer work through the reach of my social media channels, I have a weekly show on Bondi Beach Radio called Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! that is has also been a podcast that’s been on iTunes for 2.5 years now too and SO much planned for 2017.

Now… absolutely NONE of this is designed as a boast. All of this shit is real. I did this myself through a shit-ton of hard work, mistakes, early mornings and the borne of the desire to love what I do and be happy. And I’m sharing this piece not as a “Yay, me” because I believe that we should be doing what we love for a living and I believe it is a life that you can have too!

In this week’s show AKA Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! solocast, I share everything that you’ve ever wanted to know about scoring that dream job that you’ve always wanted (or the one that you simply never knew existed).

I share with you The Secret to Happiness, because it’s just so simple… and I tell you what… I never knew just how close it was and at 40 I am truly the happiest that I’ve ever been… Yep, I found it!

119 Krafty Kuts + Chali 2NA from Jurassic 5 live in Bondi

3pm Friday, my friend AJ from Central Station Records drops me a line…

“We have Krafty Kuts & Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5) doing their “It Ain’t My Fault” single launch at the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi this Wednesday 1st of March…” can we hook up an interview on Bondi Beach Radio?

Yes, yes and yes…

So AJ sends me through a couple of pressers (press releases) and a copy of the brand new single “It Ain’t My Fault” and then come Monday morning, I find myself in the boardroom at Central Station Records in Sydney for a 2:1 chat with Kraft Kuts and Chali 2na. Awesome!

Our vast ranging chats cover Krafty Kuts' earliest ever memory from his childhood of the family cat in Kingston upon Thames in the UK and Chali’s memories of his 2nd birthday in the projects of south-side Chicago, the pleasures of working with Dynamite MC and Chali 2na to bring this jam to life, our shared experiences of the inspiration of hip hop street art in Miami, Rome, Montpellier, Belgium and their 2 pieces of advice that Krafty Kuts and Chali 2na give to someone who has a dream, but is afraid to take that first step.

As Krafty tells it, studying your art and creating magic is all about practicing your art form to hone yourself into the best at what you do and I felt that myself even during this interview, as while I usually capture what I need in hour long shows that I’ve been recording for 2.5 years, we made this shit work in 25 minutes.

How good are you are marketing your own personal brand?

I don’t just mean posting photos on Instagram, writing LinkedIn articles and sending out the occasional Tweet. I mean, how are you collaborating with peers and friends in your existing and prospective networks to broaden the audience of your business, brand, blog, vlog or podcast?

One of my key goals for 2017, is to increase my volume of guest appearances on other content creators radio shows, podcasts, blogs and blogs.

I created the Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! radio show and podcast two years ago and while my extensive knowledge of digital brand marketing as a global award-winning senior social media strategist, working with a range of different brands and industries, holds me in good stead for marketing my own brand and making the strategic decision when I first started, to have the guests on Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! who are inspiring individuals and entrepreneurs across a range of industries, certainly means that the cross-section of my audiences is vast and diverse, one area that I haven’t been as great at is tapping into the network of those friends and like-minded people who have their own radio shows, podcasts, blogs, blogs and audiences of their own. It’s just another way to grow my audience and help them build theirs too!

Enter The Ladies Lounge podcast. Launched in mid-2016 and created by Sydney-based businesswomen, Anna Massie and Emma Franklin Bell, The Ladies Lounge is a show that has exploded in the past 6 months and is focused on getting up close & personal, sharing the candid stories and adventures of successful female (and male now too) entrepreneurs.

I met The Ladies Lounge crew as Anna is an amazing networker and quite literally cyber-stalked a bunch of podcast hosts, including yours truly, to see how The Ladies Lounge could grow their own podcast audience by guesting on the shows of others.

In this week’s episode of Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet, Anna Massie shares the challenges of founding and ultimately shutting down her first enterprise, The Corporate Kid, The Ladies Lounge foray into podcasting, how and why they launched the show, the power of having multiple revenue streams when you start a new business and how swallowing her pride and owning her Uber driver business which has lead to new biz opportunities, a fresh perspective on dating and a new book!

Super chats and I can’t wait for you to hear her story. I like your style, Anna Massie!

116 TwoSpace co-founder & social entrepreneur Tashi Dorjee
Excited to catch-up with Two Space co-founder and social entrepreneur, Tashi Dorjee!

Indirectly, my connection with Tashi is actually the reason Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! is now a weekly show on Bondi Beach Radio.

Tashi and I met at the Two Space co-working space for start-ups and entrepreneurs at the Kings Cross Hotel a few weeks back and I just had to get him on the show to tell his story.

Partnering with Optus and Amazon, TwoSpace connects underutilised spaces with a community of entrepreneurs, creating unique spaces that help businesses start, connect and grow.

We also chat about his work with Carbon Conservation, a business dedicated to conserving the rainforests of Indonesia and current protects 1 million hectares of rainforest and the introduction of Himalayan Chai into the Australian market back in the day by his grandmother, which went on to be adopted by Gloria Jeans and more.

Vast-ranging and fascinating chats and I just love meeting new people whom I feel like I’ve known for years. Tashi is a good one and Two Space is coming to Bondi Beach, so download this show to find out more!

Let’s get into it!

114 Newstead Brewing Company - Mark Howes (Head Brewer)
Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! podcast with head brewer & co-founder of Newstead Brewing Company, Mark Howes.

As one of the pioneers of the burgeoning Brisbane craft beer scene, molecular bioscientist Mark Howes and the partners of Newstead Brewing Co founded their brewery in December 2013 and Mark had to make the rapid transition from 40 litre home-brewer to head brewer of Newstead Brewing Company.

With a 2nd Newstead brewery, bar and restaurant set to launch shortly across the road from Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, the brainchild of the Howes clan (Peter, Heather and Mark) and Michael Conrad has gone from strength-to-strength.

Super 1-on-1 podcast about taking the leap of faith from the safety of a 9-5 to running your own successful business. Bite off more than you can chew and then chew like hell. Very exciting!
Let’s get into it!

113 Colonial Brewing Co - Grady Patching (National Operations Manager)

Craft beer comes to Bondi Beach Radio!

In this week’s fascinating insight into Colonial Brewing Co, we chat with National Operations Manager, Grady Patching about growing up in Papua New Guinea, the Colonial Brewing Co history, from founding the brewery in 2004 to setting up in Port Melbourne to enable the company to continue to be able produce and preservative-free beer on the east coast and scale the business, launching their core range beers in cans and the innovation of a 360 lid, so that you can drink straight out the can like it’s a glass, leadership and empowering your employees, Colonial Leisure Group venues such as Lucky Coq, Bimbo Deluxe and the Newtown Hotel and their brand new menu.

Awesome chat and we headed straight off to the Newtown Hotel afterwards to sample some of their delicious beers on tap and get a taste of the new menu. Giddy up!

112 Rebecca Coomes (founder of The Healthy Gut & SIBO cookbook author)
A highly successful marketing and brand communications professional who has worked with a number of high profile businesses, today’s guest on Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet on Bondi Beach Radio, Rebecca Coomes, is a friend of mine whom I’ve known for about 20 years and is now the owner and founder of The Healthy Gut and author of the new series of SIBO Cookbooks.

Before we get into the thick of things of show I wanted provide people with context as to the subject matter today and what SIBO is for those of you who haven’t heard of it before. I must admit to feeling a little confronted bringing this topic to radio as it is not easy subject matter to bring up in a public sphere, but that in itself is exactly why I decided that it was important to do it.

Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is caused when excess number of bacteria enter the small intestine. Some of the symptoms associated with SIBO include abdominal cramping, bloating, food sensitivities and diarrhoea and/or constipation.

Though not well known in Australia, SIBO is potentially a very common condition as it is estimated that up to 80% of IBS sufferers may actually have undiagnosed SIBO.

Author Rebecca Coomes suffered from chronic health issues her whole life. After years of frustrations seeing GPs and her health not improving, she turned to a Naturopath who diagnosed her with SIBO and recommended a new clean eating plan restricting all grains, all sugars, fermentable fibres and processed foods amongst a wider list of gut troubling foods.

It means so much to me to promote the wonderful projects and businesses that my friends and people that inspire me are creating and if I can’t utilise my own platforms to not only celebrate their hard work, but raise awareness for important topics that quite often go unnoticed and can make a massive impact on people’s lives in the process, then what is the point in doing what I do.

And the best part? The recipes are 100% gluten-free and include dairy-free and sugar-free recipes too.

Bec Coomes, you are a legend! Let’s get into the show!

111 Damian Costin (123 Agency founder + Nighthawk drummer)
Damian Costin has been in the music industry for over 20 years. Starting out as the drummer of Australian rock band Motor Ace in the late 90’s performing shows with bands including the Foo Fighters, Oasis and Blink 182, Damo switched to the other side of the fence and hit the ground running as one of the top bookers in the Australian industry and a few years back founded his own artist booking agency and corporate business called 123 Agency.

123 Agency boasts an super impressive artist roster that is testament to the hard work of Damo and his 123 Agency team. There’s a whole BUNCH of my favourite Australian artists and bands including Kingswood, Tash Sultana, Ash Grunwald, Harts, Pierce Brothers, Clairy Browne, The Delta Riggs and shitloads more.

He’s also back behind the kit in Aussie band Nighthawk. We have SUCH much to talk about and get through including the evolution of 123 Agency, some of your artists including Kingswood and Tash Sultana… so let’s get into it.

Enjoy the show!
